I have never seen where pagerank is important in ranking high within google. Keywords within the url seem to rank high. The single most important thing is your H1 title tags and incoming links.

KB,
Based on what Matt Cutts has been letting on in his recent public appearances, I would suggest you continue with longtails and "roll up" to larger keywords. It is easier to rank and get authority for longtails than "big money" large terms. Once you've hit #1 on those longtails or have enough highly ranked longtails, start working toward the bigger keywords. This has been our strategy on many client sites and it's been paying off--they get more traffic through longtails and their rankings for the bigger terms have risen as well.

Regardless, the best form of SEO is relevant and highly useful CONTENT.

I would LOVE your opinion on a topic that I can not seem to find the answer for.

My developer told me it would be wise to take off all the internal links of my long tail words, as these links were diluting the possibility of rising in the ranks for the three main key words. For example, I used to have all the local cities we sold to with the key word and more long tail versions.

We converted the site and I took his suggestion. Our sales are down a lot, BUT we might be on our way..( a slow process) to getting optimized for the big fish.

What is your recommendation on this topic? Is it better to first go for the three big words THAN the long tails, or long tails while you are waiting for the big ones.

How do you do this so it does not dilute your pages?

Many thanks....can't wait to hear!

Great post. I really love how you talk about finding longtail SEO keywords. But nonetheless, I've still been having a problem finding the correct/right key words for my blog. Do you have any advise?
